Jill and Phil's recollections following Huw Jones' passing
Created by Tirion 2 years ago
We were so sorry to hear of Huw's sudden death. What a shock! We are thinking of you and your family a great deal at this time. Huw was such a lovely man, a really unique character. Sadly, we won't be able to be present at the funeral in person as we aren't travelling very well at the moment, especially Phil.
What especially delighted me about Huw and his gifts was his inveterate love of language and word games. I remember clearly once, when I said to Huw "Huw, I'd really like to write a book or some poetry." His response was terse, warm and richly challenging. He replied "Phil, it's not so much that I'd like to write, I have to. There isn't a choice for me. It's an imperative".
My other strong memory of adventures with Huw is when, in 1977, the Student Christian Movement purchased a house and office in Laura Place, Aberystwyth, to act as a student community house and centre. The SCM had no cash to play with and so we had to furnish the Laura Place house with gifts from friends and relatives. Huw put us in touch with a string of Welsh aunties and we and he spent a day or two traversing Wales in a furniture van picking up settees, tables, chairs, kitchen utensils and bedding from delighted relatives who were happy to unload their ancient goods.
Huw we'll miss you!
We send lots of love and prayers to you all.
